Book Cover

Skill Level: Easy

Materials

  • Yarn: Worsted Weight (Amount required depends on the size of cover, but one 7 oz ball will be enough for a large book cover)

  • Hook size H

  • Tapestry needle

  • Scissors

Size

  • Gauge: Two rounds is about 2”x 2.5”. Gauge does not have to be perfect. You’ll continue making rounds until your piece is large enough.

  • Measure the object you’re making this cover for the dimensions you want. E-reader finished size

Stitches/Techniques

  • Magic ring

  • Chain (ch)

  • Stitch (st)

  • Double crochet (dc)

  • Slip stitch (sl st)

Pattern

Rnd 1: Make a magic ring and ch 3,  2 dc. *ch 2, 3dc. Repeat * 3 times making 4 dc clusters in the ring. Ch 2 one more time and sl st to top of ch 3 and pull ring tight.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in space to the directly below/ slightly to the right of the hook (like you’re working backwards). Then in the corner space to the left,  *3dc ch 2 3 dc, repeat from * in each corner space, finishing with 3 dc ch 2 in last space and sl st to top of first ch 3.

Rnd 3 and on: Ch 3 and 2 dc in first corner space, 3 dc in each space, 3dc ch 2 3dc, in each corner. End with 3 dc ch2 sl st to first ch 3.

Continue rounds like this until work is as big as you need it to be. When it is time to assemble the cover, you will fold piece like an envelope with the corners meeting in the center.

At this point, check that your piece is almost big enough to accommodate the dimensions of your e-reader or book by folding the corners to the center of the piece like an envelope and measuring the sides. You will be adding a border and using sc to join the folded sides so you’ll be adding another inch or so to the diagonal length.

Border: Ch 1, sc in each st around. In the corners, 3 sc in the center dc from the round below. Do not fasten off.

Cord (for closing)

From the corner, ch 30 (or however many you need make the cord long enough to wrap around).

At the end of the ch, sc in second ch from hook and work back toward the cover again to make the cord thicker. After the last ch, sl st to the sc on the corner for an even join. Fasten off.

Assembly

Fold piece like an envelope with the outer corners meeting in the center, but with the wrong side facing out (when the sides are all joined we will pull the envelope inside out). Then starting in one of the corners at the bottom of the envelope, insert your hook in the back loops of the two stitches that meet in the center of the corner. Sc the two back loops together and repeat along the seam to join the sides.

Continue joining these two pieces with sc evenly across until you reach the center where all the pieces meet, sc across to the other side and continue to join in this way. Fasten off at the center of the opposite corner and pull the envelope inside out
